Design And Performace

However, in today's fiercely competitive market for high-end SUVs, can the struggling automaker hold its own? Lucid Motors has recently revealed their latest addition to the electric vehicle lineup: the three-row Gravity SUV.

The brand-new SUV has a new special build platform, proprietary electric powertrain, the gravity will deliver an exhilarating driving experience, the Air sedan, this marks the California-based company's initiation into the highly competitive SUV market. With an impressive range of up to 440 miles and a swift acceleration of 0–60 mph in under 3.5 seconds, the SUV comes with a base price of $80,000 and is projected to begin production in late 2024.

Lucid Competitors

However, the current state of the scenery is starkly contrasting to three years ago when Lucid initially hinted at a potential electric SUV. The luxury electric vehicle industry, in particular, is fiercely competitive and heavily saturated, with various options from brands like Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac, and BMW. According to experts, the era of early adopters for EVs has passed and there is a greater need for affordable models rather than another high-end luxury option under $100,000.

Additionally, Lucid has faced significant challenges this year. Recently, the company had to reduce its production goals, resulting in a sharp decline in its stock value. The manufacturing expenses for Lucid are exceptionally high and according to The Wall Street Journal, the company incurs a massive loss of $227,000 per vehicle sold. Despite these obstacles, Lucid continues to encounter difficulties in attracting buyers for its electric vehicles.

Lucid Backstory

Amongst the bleak headlines, the introduction of the Gravity offers a glimmer of optimism for Lucid. Previously known as Atieva and established in 2007, the company initially focused on producing powerful batteries for each of the Formula E racing teams. In 2016, they rebranded as Lucid Motors and committed to creating a midsize sedan with the sensation of a spacious and luxurious flagship vehicle. Shortly after, an SUV was also in the works.

Despite facing pandemic-related and other delays, the SUV has finally arrived. With its grand debut, the Gravity appears to be a fitting successor to the luxurious Air sedan. Most notably, it stands out as a top contender in the EV market with an impressive 440-mile range on a single charge. This surpasses other three-row electric SUVs such as the Tesla Model X (at 348 miles), Kia EV9 (at 230 miles), Rivian R1S (dual motor version at 400 miles), and Volvo EX90 (at 300 miles). As expected from Lucid, their range estimates are accompanied by claims of exceptional battery capacity and performance.

The Air was initially projected to have over 520 miles of range, but subsequent tests revealed a lower figure. However, it is important to consider external factors such as temperature, driving style, and road conditions when looking at range estimates.

In terms of design, the Gravity boasts smooth curves and fluid lines that create an aerodynamic profile. The elongated cabin is disguised expertly and overall, the shape exudes a sense of sleekness and momentum.

This theme carries through to the back of the vehicle, with a C pillar angled sharply like an arrow pointing forward. Lucid has set its sights on a drag coefficient below 0.24, which they claim surpasses all other three-row SUVs currently available on the market. And although it has a sporty appeal, don't be fooled - the Gravity can still handle hauling and towing tasks like any other SUV. With "the most power-dense EV motors in production globally," it can carry up to 1,500lbs or tow up to 6,000lbs. That's just shy of what the Ford F-150 Lightning can do - which is pretty impressive to consider.

With the increasing popularity of rapid charging and the emergence of 800-volt architecture electric vehicles, Lucid has taken it to the next level with their Gravity model. With a 900-volt architecture, this vehicle can gain an additional 200 miles in a mere 15 minutes when utilising a 350kW fast charger.

Lucid CEO - Peter Rawlinson

According to a statement released by Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson, the implementation of Gravity technology will allow our customers to travel longer distances while using fewer batteries, resulting in reduced energy consumption. With its compact and advanced battery pack, this innovative technology reduces the need for costly metals and minerals, requires less electricity for charging, places less strain on the power grid, and results in a lighter and more agile vehicle. This is a testament to our commitment to advancing technology in a sustainable manner.

Lucid Gravity Interior

The interior of the vehicle boasts two prominent screens. One is a 34-inch curved OLED display, positioned above the steering wheel, which functions as both an instrument cluster and infotainment screen. The other is a Pilot Panel located in the center console, which can be folded up to reveal additional storage space. Additionally, the Gravity model will showcase Lucid's latest operating system software, capable of over-the-air updates.

There will be a range of features aimed at promoting "well being" and improving the driving experience. These include Lucid Sanctuary, described as offering "revolutionary experiences for on-the-go tranquility," and Lucid Spaces, which can transform the cabin into a peaceful oasis inspired by locations like Lake Tahoe and Joshua Tree with just one tap.

It is hoped that these features will help reduce incidents of road rage when encountering traffic. Other details about the Gravity are still scarce, but production is slated to begin in late 2024. With majority ownership from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and plans for a factory in Jeddah city, it remains to be seen if Lucid can overcome its financial challenges before launching the Gravity.
