The most powerful member of the new 5-series sedan family is the i5 M60 xDrive, boasting a whopping 590 horsepower - and it's electric! The 530i and 540i models are still available, powered by gas.

Electrification has now been added to the BMW 5-series. The latest eighth generation of this sedan, which sits between the 3-series and 7-series, will be offered as a full electric version, the 2024 BMW i5, alongside various gas-powered models.

The 5-Series follows the same strategy as the 4 and 7-Series, using a shared platform to underpin both gas and battery-electric versions. It has more conservative styling than the 7, with 3.9 inches of additional length, 1.3 more width, 1.4 inches additional height and a 0.8 inch longer wheelbase.

The dash-to-axle ratio is also proportionately greater than before; its broad grille still apparent though not quite at massive as on the 7 or graced with the "bucktooth grin” found on the 4 and M3/M4 models.

North American customers will have a range of five 5-series configurations to pick from, all boasting automatic transmissions. The least costly is the 530i, equipped with BMW's signature 255-hp 2.0-liter turbo four and optional all-wheel drive. BMW states that variants with rear-wheel drive should hit 60 mph in 5.9 seconds, while those featuring all-wheel drive will accomplish this feat in 5.8 seconds. Models with a four-cylinder engine kick off at $58,895, while the 530i xDrive begins at $61,195 when it becomes available in October.

At the top end of the gas-powered range is the six-cylinder 540i xDrive. The turbocharged 3.0-liter six delivers a substantial 375 horsepower and 384 pound-feet (398 pound-feet with its 48-volt mild hybrid system engaged). BMW promises an impressive 0 to 60 mph sprint in 4.8 seconds, making it the speediest of all gasoline 5 Series models. Noteworthy is that it's the last one to be released, going on sale in November this year.

Customers looking for a 5-series with battery power have their pick of two options, the i5 and i5 eDrive40. With 335 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, the latter is fitted with a rear motor and has an 84.3-kWh battery offering a potential EPA range nearing 300 miles.

It's expected to reach 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and its pricing starts at $67,795, excluding any Inflation Reduction Act tax credits as it sits over the $55,000 threshold. The M Sport package is available, adding distinctive features such as darkened metal trim, newly designed wheels, as well as a more imposing look to both ends of the 4100-pound sedan and refined suspension tuning.

The BMW M60 is certainly no slouch when it comes to speed and power--it can sprint from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 143 mph (130 with winter tires). In addition, its 84.3 kWh battery provides an estimated range of 256 miles, which gets even further amplified when using its MAX Range mode: this limits the top speed to 56 mph and deactivates certain features like the climate control, heated seats and heated steering wheel. It also boasts an impressive 400-volt architecture for up to 205 kW DC fast-charging as well as 11 kW charging on a Level 2 hookup. And should you want more drama--the car also plays a Sport soundtrack when you pull the Boost paddle behind the steering wheel for max acceleration.

BMW has dubbed its driver-assist system Driving Assistant Professional. This includes the Active Lane Change Assistant, which - similarly to GM's SuperCruise - can change lanes automatically to avoid slower traffic. It should be noted that BMW's feature only initiates this change when the driver looks in the respective mirror.

Its four-wheel steering, active anti-roll bars and adaptive dampers are all available as optional extras. We still have a few months until sales begin in late September and we'll be sure to let you know how BMW have tuned their hardware and what driving the new 5 is like.
