It's plain to see that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is still leaving an indelible mark in the industry, even five years after it made waves at the end of 2018. The latest release from Paramount Pictures - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem - serves as a stark reminder of this, as it marks the first animated Ninja Turtles picture in 16 years.

Produced by Seth Rogen and directed by Jeff Rowe, Mutant Mayhem boasts a stylized comic book look that's far-removed from the hyperrealism popular since Pixar's Toy Story in 1995. It looks quite similar to Into the Spider-Verse, with its own unique flourishes. As for the storyline, all we know is that mutated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles emerge from New York City sewers ready to save their city—and maybe the world—from Shredder. The Ninja Turtles franchise is about to push boundaries with its own version of Spider-Verse. Its pencil-like textures, and dynamic movement will combine with humour sure to entertain adults as well as children.

While indie animators often venture into riskier styles, bigger studios have mostly stuck with the half-cartoony, half-realistic aesthetic. But recently there have been similar "Into The Spider Verse Style" movies experiments such as "The Mitchells vs. The Machines" and "Entergalactic" are successful examples.

The Ninja Turtles have grown a great deal since their humble beginnings as rough drafts in Laird and Eastman’s sketchbook. And with the trailer released for Mutant Mayhem, it appears that the Turtles are refocusing on their origins - borrowing from Spider-Man for inspiration.

Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem opens in Theaters on August 4, 2023.
