Apple is finally making strides in the world of AR glasses after years of waiting. They are launching their initial attempt at delivering the technology to the public.
Apple has just unveiled their new augmented reality headset, Apple Vision Pro. It's the first product from the company that you will look through, and not at. With its sleek design – resembling ski goggles – it is designed to bring together the digital and real world seamlessly. Utilizing technology like eye-tracking, voice commands, as well as movement of your hands, CEO Tim Cook claims it to provide an exceptional user experience. The device will become available in early 2021 and set customers back $3,499; with more countries being added later in the year after its US launch.

Vision Pro is designed first and foremost as an augmented reality device, but can be toggled for full virtual reality using a dial. There is no controller required - usage of the operating system, VisionOS, is facilitated by looking at its rows of app icons, then selecting and flicking through them. Plus, it is also equipped with voice command capabilities. Bluetooth enabled accessories such as Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad are compatible with the headset, and Mac can even be connected for use inside the headset. Additionally, its downward-facing cameras are able to detect movements of hands even if they may rest low on your body.
The Apple headset boasts a glass front and an aluminum frame, containing 5 sensors, 12 cameras and a 4K display for each eye. It's cooled with a fan-assisted computer. The "Light Seal" mask and "Head Band" strap are cloth-lined and adjustable to suit various face shapes and sizes.
An external battery offers two hours of usage time, attachable via a supple woven cable or plugged in for all day use. Additionally, Zeiss has constructed custom optical inserts that magnetically fit onto the lenses for those wearing glasses. It'll be sharper than any other display on the market and is powered by an M2 chip plus the newly integrated R1 chip.
