The 2025 Volvo EX30 is a compact SUV with a reasonable range and an attractive starting cost of $34,950. Production will kick off soon, with purchasers expected to receive their vehicles in the beginning of 2024.
The Swedish carmaker Volvo has gone against the trend of EV's getting bigger, introducing their compact EX30 SUV powered by a modestly sized battery delivering a solid amount of range. To make it even more appealing, the starting price tag is set at $34,950 - a reasonable figure considering EV's have become quite expensive in recent times. Even its announcement was done in reference to its smaller size, with an early teaser image featuring a giant hand coming down to pick up your EX30.
Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo, expressed in a statement that the EX30 is certainly small in size, yet its performance still packs a punch. In other words, this vehicle offers all the hallmarks of a classic Volvo while taking up less space.
Volvo hasn't held back when it comes to larger cars either; its upcoming EX90 SUV is a luxury three-row option based on the extremely popular XC90. But in a sector where greater size usually translates to greater battery power and more emissions, Volvo's drive for an affordable EV in a small class is remarkable.
Volvo’s offering with the EX30 is remarkable: a 69kWh battery capable of 153kW of DC fast charging and 26.5 minutes from zero to 80 percent charge time, plus two trims, the single-motor extended-range model and a higher-performing dual-motor version.

The rear axle motor can get 268 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque whereas the AWD adds 154 horsepower to the front axle for an impressive total of 422 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque - with acceleration times of 5.1 seconds for the single motor version and 3.4 seconds for the dual motor model making this Volvo's fastest accelerating car yet! It may be small in size but it’s certainly packed with potential.
The single-motor variant is expected to offer approximately 275 miles of range while the dual-motor version may be limited to 265 miles. Even these estimates need to be taken with a pinch of salt as figures from the EPA could turn out to be slightly lower.
When you look at the details, Volvo's EX30 is slight in size compared to the Volkswagen ID.4 and Tesla Model Y. Although it has a smaller wheelbase than both cars (104.3 inches vs. 108.9 and 113.8 inches, respectively), it offers comparatively more room for cargo (31.9 cubic feet). In total, it measures 166.7 inches long, 61.1 inches tall, and 80 inches wide. The automaker also produced a limited-edition Cross Country variant of the EX30 with boosted features like increased ground clearance and special 19-inch wheels or 18-inch wheels with custom tires.
The EX30 won't have the high-end sensors seen on the EX90, like lidar laser sensors, but it does boast some innovative safety features. It will be Volvo's first car with the new Park Assist Pilot which should tackle any parking task - parallel, curved, diagonal or fishbone. An important cautionary feature is also included; an alert is sounded if someone is nearby as you open your door to prevent hitting a cyclist.
The EX30 is set to join a crowded market when it debuts in 2021. Its user experience will be supported by familiar software suppliers such as Apple and Qualcomm, but also by Geely-owned startup Ecarx. The two-row electric SUVs currently leading the market include the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, soon to be joined by the Chevy Equinox and Blazer EVs, Polestar 3, and Honda Prologue. Like other Volvo vehicles, its portrait-style touchscreen will run an operating software with native versions of Google Apps like Maps, Assistant and Play.
Volvo claims it will have sold 600,000 EVs by the middle of the coming decade. To achieve this, the carmaker is partnering with Swedish firm Northvolt to develop a next-generation battery with increased energy density. This should permit a range of up to 1,006km per charge and faster recharge times when released after 2025.
They are also incorporating these batteries as integral structural elements in their vehicles. 2021 has seen the launch of two such long-range EVs — XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge — while the EX90 has been postponed until early 2022 due to software issues.
