The winner of the Polestar Design Contest 2022 was revealed as a full-scale 1:1 creation during IAA 2023 in Munich, accompanied by a Hot Wheels collaboration.

Polestar is beginning a collaboration with Mattel's Hot Wheels brand. The first step in this venture is a Polestar Design Contest inspired by the creative and daring designs of the American company, which has been around for over half a century. Moving forward, Polestar's production models will be captured forever as Hot Wheels and Matchbox collectibles.

The Polestar Synergy electric fantasy supercar is the result of a successful competition with over 600 entrants. Entrants responded to a brief focused on performance experience and sustainability and after shortlisting ten designs, two exterior winners and one interior winner emerged – a rarity for the competition. This marked the beginning of a collaboration between these three creative minds and the Polestar Design team, to craft an impressive reality from their unique dreams.

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, congratulated the winners on their success; the collaborative effort with our designers resulted in a truly beautiful car. As part of the continuing success of the Polestar Design Contest we are excited to be teaming up with Mattel next year. We anticipate that scale models of our production cars will bring the ideals of the Polestar brand and this special competition to those who may not have had exposure to them before; this stands as evidence that electric vehicles can be just as stimulating or more so than ICE vehicles.

Roberto Stanichi, SVP and Global Head of Vehicles at Mattel, declares: “Polestar is setting a new standard for electrifying performance and pioneering automotive progress while Hot Wheels continues to challenge the status quo of fabrication and styling. Therefore, it's an honour to initiate this linkage with the victor of this year’s Design Contest. This amalgamation symbolises the spirit of Hot Wheels - hard work, perseverance and enthusiasm that drives ahead innovative automotive design. We are excited to witness conceptions for the upcoming Challenge!”

The new fantasy supercar has been crafted to both evoke nature and withstand the test of time. This single-seat wonder boasts a floating interior design with control at its core and is currently being displayed at the Polestar Space in Munich during IAA 2023. Head of Design, Maximillian Missoni expressed his pride at how the team were able to assist these student designers with their dream project, allowing them to be exposed so early on in their career due to the platform provided by the Polestar Design Community on Instagram and now with the help of this full-scale model that will tour Polestar locations around the globe soon.

Devashish Deshmukh and Swapnil Desai, winners in the exterior design category, are both French-based. Deshmukh took inspiration from the hammerhead shark to craft hollowed-out volumes, while Desai focused on durability and upgradability with materials that age beautifully. Yingxiang Li, an interior designer from China, fashioned a cabin with a performance-based seating position for a new experience involving "floating comfort and control". Altogether, this car is evidently imbued with Polestar's trademark performance values. Strikingly small at 1.07 metres tall and 4.56 metres long, the car portrays proportions and details unseen before from this brand - confirming electric supercars can make just as much of an impact as traditional petrol ones.
